Biography
Ernesto Fiocchetto is an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Politics and International Relations and the Department of Religious Studies at Florida International University. He earned his Ph.D. in International Relations from FIU in 2024, with a dissertation on faith actors' role in the reception and integration of Latin American queer refugees in Spain and the United States, which received the School of International and Public Affairs' Best Dissertation Award. He also holds an M.A. in International Studies and an M.A. in Religious Studies from FIU, a Graduate Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, a Licentiate in Sociology from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (Argentina), and a B.A. in Theology from the Universidad Católica Argentina.
His research and teaching focus on global governance, forced migration and international protection, and the experiences of refugees based on sexual orientation and gender identity, drawing on qualitative methods and an intersectional, queer-theoretical approach, with particular attention to the role of religion and faith actors in these processes. His work has appeared in the Journal of Refugee Studies and several edited volumes, and he is a co-author of The Politics of Social In/Exclusion in the EU: Civic Europe in an Age of Uncertainty (Springer, 2023). He has also written op-eds for outlets including Foreign Policy in Focus, Latinoamérica21, and Global Americans.
At FIU, he teaches courses including Theories of International Relations, International LGBT Politics and Advocacy, The Global Challenge of Refugees and Migrants, International Relations of Europe, World Christianity, and Latino/a Immigration and Religion.
