Sharlia Gulley

I am an first year PhD student in politics and international relations as well as getting my Masters in African and African Diaspora studies. I graduated from CSULA with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Pan African Studies (the 2nd university to establish African/Black Studies in the country!) I was a primary organizer for J4TMLA which later formed into the international Black Lives Matter movement and was a primary point of contact as well as head of communications.

My interests are centered around using art as a catalyst for social and political change and movements. I'm also working on uncovering the impact of sociopolitical campaigns (largely orchestrated by the west) in the development of racial identities on the island of Hispaniola. My goal in this work is to alleviate tension and oppressive policies on the island by highlighting commonalities and shared cultural experience.
